When does the league start? Where do the teams play?
Any questions related to dates and locations whether they be season start dates or registration dates can be found on the about page.
How much does it cost to play?
The price for the current season is listed on the about page. There is no guarantee this will be the same year to year as it depends on the number of teams and the fees charged by the facility for rentals each year. It most likely won’t jump too much year to year though so you can probably estimate based on the current seasons prices.
How many of each sex are required on the court during a game?
Our league requires at least 2 females on the court during a set in the regular season. During playoffs at least 3 females must be on the court during each set.
What are the formats of the matches?
We try to sign up our teams so that the amount of teams is divisible by 3. This gives us 3 teams per court each evening. Each team on the court will play the others in a best of 2 set match. Each set is to 25 points and is run in a rally format.
When you say competitive, how competitive is it?
Our league is still a recreational league but the teams currently in it play 3 hits, play positions, and the rallies are high energy. Expect teams to be hitting balls at you and you should be experienced enough to try and block those hits. Most teams, although competitive in nature, will play to the level of others. If a team is a little less experienced, others will usually take that into consideration and not swing at a ball as hard as they can. At the end of the day, we are all friends and don’t play to hurt any one. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out!
Are there refs?
Three teams play on a court per evening. The team that isn’t playing during the current match will be officiating but do not need to supply a ref. This is a self officiating league so we rely on the honour system. This will require you to know the rules meaning you should call yourself and your team when you touch the net and call your carries and two hits, among other things. The rules can be found on the rule page here on the website. Our league follows the Volleyball Canada rules unless exceptions are noted. We hope that every team can call themselves and there aren’t arguments between teams when one team attempts to call the other on violations. Although games can very intense, this is still just for fun!
What are the duties of the officiating team?
The team officiating should supply one person to flip the score, one person to mark the score, and one person for each line.
What if we don’t have enough people to play for a match?
You are more than welcome to ask a friend to come play as we don’t have official rosters. If you can’t find someone to sub for your team, you can always use someone from the officiating team on your court, or ask an officiating team from another.
What if we can’t field a team for an evening?
If you can’t field a team for the evening, please let the league know in advance. This will let us notify the teams you were scheduled to play and they can make arrangements as they please. If this becomes a regular occurrence the league will have to take action and possibly eject you from the league. If you are ejected from the league for any reason, your fees are non-refundable.
Can I join the league without a team?
If you are looking for a team, join our Facebook group and make a post letting others know! If some teams already in the league need a player, this is a great way to get the word out that you are looking. Make sure to post enough information so that the teams looking find out what they may need to know. Things like what position do you play, if you’ve played before, and what level of ball it was?
